The Onyx label's series of Beethoven's violin-and-piano music has not featured the charismatic performances of a Kremer or an Oistrakh, but the recordings by violinist James Ehnes have a lived-in quality, derived from several years of live appearances, that makes them worth the listener's time and money. What Ehnes and pianist Andrew Armstrong bring to these pieces is not an overarching approach but a sensitivity to the particular qualities of these works, which arose during a period in which Beethoven was completely rethinking an existing genre. As in their fine recording of the Op. 12 sonatas, Ehnes and Armstrong do not strain to eliminate the traces of the "sonata for piano and violin," as Beethoven still called these works. When the violin has a less significant part, Ehnes does not exaggerate it. Yet they are also alert to the restless anticipations of Beethoven's more heroic mode in the opening movement of the Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Op. 23, and the irregular phrasing of the Violin Sonata No. 8 in G major, Op. 30, No. 3. The emerging division between heroic and pastoral is also on full display here. An added attraction of the Ehnes-Armstrong series has been the presence of small, less-often-played violin-and-piano works, and the pair are delightful and will fill a hole on Beethoven shelves or hard drives. A strong entry in Onyx's series.
