Avec sa disparition tragique et prématurée, finalement peu surprenante au regard du train de vie d’Amy Winehouse, c’est une voix à part de la soul contemporaine qui s’éteint le 23 juillet 2011. Une voix qui ne doit guère être zappée d’un revers de manche ni par cette vie chaotique d’étoile filante faisant la fortune des tabloïds britanniques, ni par les torrents d’alcool et de stupéfiants et encore moins par ces centaines de vidéos trainant sur YouTube de concerts ratés voire pathétiques… Lorsque le phénomène Winehouse explose réellement avec ce deuxième album, le sublime Back To Black bien supérieur à son premier disque Frank, la soul music n’est pas au mieux, offrant déesses R&B creuses et sirupeuses sur productions aseptisées. Ils sont alors peu nombreux à tenter de faire véritablement évoluer l’idiome sculpté par les Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Dinah Washington et autres Marlena Shaw. Amy Winehouse offre alors une voix de panthère, de vraies chansons (qu’elle écrit, contrairement à 90% de ses consœurs), une production aux accents vintage (mais jamais passéistes) et un instrumentarium cuivré à souhait. Pour couronner le tout, même l’image est unique : choucroute 50’s, tatouages de bikeuse et attitude gouailleuse! Back To Black a beau avoir trusté le sommet des charts aux quatre coins du monde durant des mois et des mois, il n’en reste pas moins un vrai chef d’œuvre de soul music et de rhythm’n’blues. Quand l’avis critique rencontre l’avis populaire – phénomène assez rare pour être souligné – le plaisir n’est que décuplé… © MZ/Qobuz
