Canada's Elora Singers developed in tandem with a music festival in the small Ontario town of the same name. The choir is made up of professional singers, and they were led for many years by the conductor on this 2018 release, Noel Edison. Thus they have developed a distinctively warm sound characterized by strong enunciation and involvement with the text. These qualities are on display in this collection of a cappella choral music, and the best news is that they're paired with a program of considerable originality. Neither the title, And So It Goes: Songs of Folk and Lore, nor the composers listed in the graphics -- Eric Whitacre, Ivor Novello, and Billy Joel -- really give the buyer an idea of what's contained here, although it is Joel's song that gives the album its title. Much of the music is Canadian, and it is the complex nature of much Canadian folk-pop that gives the album its flavor and its unusual way of blurring the lines between classical and vernacular material. Sample Fogarty's Cove, by Stan Rogers, a folk songwriter much better known north of the border than in the U.S.; the arrangement here by Ron Small is particularly evocative. In addition to Rogers, Gordon Lightfoot, Jimmy Rankin, and Rita MacNeil are all represented, and all work beautifully in this kind of arrangement. In contrast to the directness of their songs are the more virtuoso materials of American and British composers; the choir expertly handles the difficult Go, lovely rose from the Three Flower Songs of the American Eric Whitacre and one of the Prairie Songs of the late Stephen Paulus. It's a mixture that has resemblances to the American collegiate choir combination of a classical start and pop standards to finish, but has an entirely different effect. If a trip to Stratford or one of the other Canadian cultural icons is not in the budget this year, spring instead for this lovely (and budget-priced) release.
