En 1976, avec l’album Spirit, Maurice White, en bon gérant de secte, déballe son karma écolo-mystico-égypto-possitiviste. Sa pop gospel cultive le mythe de la symphonie afro-américaine. Tout est huilé à la perfection et les harmonies vocales enveloppées dans la basse de son frère Verdine transportent les fans d’Earth Wind & Fire au septième ciel. Empreint de spiritualité (étonnant, non ?), l’enregistrement de Spirit fut toutefois marqué par la mort de Charles Stepney, mentor, compositeur et surtout arrangeur hors pair du groupe. Les pyramides apparaissent sur la pochette de l’album comme elles envahiront, un an plus tard, celle de ce All’n’All, nouveau sommet de funk pop emmené par les tubesques Fantasy, Serpentine Fire, Jupiter et quelques autres perles bien brillantes typiques de ce Earth, Wind & Fire du milieu des seventies. Mais une grande partie du public noir commence à distinguer la part funk de celle plus pop. Ainsi, Serpentine Fire, dernier grand titre funk, se placera à la première place des charts R&B, ce qui n’arrivera pas au très sucré Boogie Wonderland… Quoi qu’il en soit, avec All’n’All, Earth Wind & Fire loge toujours au premier étage des charts (à la même époque La Fièvre du samedi soir est sur tous les écrans) et les Grammy Awards pleuvent sur les étagères de Maurice White. © MZ/Qobuz
