Une intro industrielle, puis un « Gematria (The Killing Name) » diablement efficace et un « Sulfur » insane à ravir : on croirait revenu le Slipknot des débuts, celui qui ne s’embarrassait pas encore de ballades pour briquets en l’air mais donnait dans un metal brutal et souvent irrésistible.

Annoncé comme le plus lourd de la discographie du groupe, All Hope Is Gone ne tient pas tout à fait sa promesse et les fans déçus par l’étonnant Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) ne manqueront pas d’ironiser sur le titre de l’album (« Tout espoir est envolé ») et de déplorer que, sous l’impulsion de son frontman Corey Taylor – qui chante sur la plupart des titres –, Slipknot se « Stone Sour-ise ».

Le refrain est bien connu dans le metal : arrive souvent le moment – généralement lorsque ses membres dépassent la trentaine... – où un groupe se lasse de sa radicalité et des « ficelles ». Les critiques parlent alors d’« album de la maturité » et les fans conservateurs d’« album de la trahison », la vérité se situant souvent entre les deux. Metallica (l’album noir), Deftones (White Pony) et Nine Inch Nails (The Fragile), parmi bien d’autres, sont passés par là et Slipknot ne pouvait pas y réchapper…

Ce n’est pourtant pas faire justice à un groupe qui livre ici un disque solide, varié. Il n’atteint certes pas la qualité de ses puissants et ravageurs premiers albums – devenus des classiques –, dont la force tenait à l'intensité des morceaux, tout de rage post-adolescente, déversée sans nuance et presque gratuitement dans un vacarme dévastateur. Mais il y a que les musiciens ont à présent tous plus de trente ans, sont souvent parents – et les sentiments ne sont plus les mêmes, se sont nuancés, ce à quoi les compositions font écho logiquement (même si le groupe ne se départit pas d’un son lourd, sombre et globalement agressif). Ce que démontre d'ailleurs l’excellente ballade « Snuff » (reste que l’on conçoit mal comment le groupe pourrait jouer un pareil morceau sur scène et comment Corey Taylor sous son masque de Leatherface pourrait chanter « So if you love me, let me go » après avoir aboyé durant 3/4 du set…).

Loin d’être un album de trop, ce quatrième album contient son lot d’excellents morceaux, dignes de ce que le groupe de Des Moines peut de meilleur (« Gematria », « This Cold Black » ou le premier single « All Hope Is Gone », probablement l’un des meilleurs du ’Knot), et synthétise ses trois prédécesseurs, des tendances ultra-brutales (« All Hope Is Gone » clôt d’ailleurs cet album homonyme de la meilleure façon, montrant un groupe qui ne dépose pas les armes) aux tendances plus mélodiques. Même s’il ne s’agit pas d’un grand cru de Slipknot, All Hope Is Gone est un vrai bon album de metal, non dépourvu de quelques longueurs, mais que rachètent largement les meilleurs titres.

Avec 125 millions d’albums vendus à travers le monde, dont une trentaine de millions pour le “Black Album”, Metallica est l’un des phénomènes pop les plus inattendus des 50 dernières années. Comment un groupe de metal aux chansons structurées de manière aussi alambiquée est-il parvenu à se jucher au niveau des produits de Madonna ou Michael Jackson ? Avec de l’intuition et beaucoup de détermination. Retour aux sources du groupe de metal le plus important de l’histoire.

“Back in Black” : AC/DC en pleine lumière

Avec ses 50 millions d’exemplaires, “Back in Black” est le deuxième album le plus vendu au monde, juste derrière “Thriller” de Michael Jackson ! Qui aurait imaginé que ce septième opus studio d’AC/DC arborerait un tel palmarès alors que son charismatique chanteur Bon Scott est mort prématurément après la sortie de “Highway to Hell”. La fin du tome 1 mais surtout le début du tome 2 dont les fans du gang australien continuent aujourd’hui à tourner les pages…

Objectif Lune : The Dark Side of the Moon

Album phare dans la discographie de Pink Floyd, “The Dark Side of the Moon” est le fruit d’une élaboration relativement lente qui remonte pratiquement à 1968. “A Saucerful of Secrets” (le morceau phare de l’album éponyme) en est, pour Nick Mason, le point de départ. Derrière, “Ummagumma” laissait s’exprimer des personnalités qu’il allait falloir amalgamer pour décrocher la timbale.
