Pour beaucoup, A Love Supreme est non seulement l’un des plus grands disques de John Coltrane mais l’un des plus grands disques de l’histoire du jazz tout court ! Pour célébrer ses 50 ans, sa version The Complete Masters propose, sur 3 CD, de plonger dans cet enregistrement fascinant grâce à de nombreuses prises inédites (notamment en sextet avec Archie Shepp et Art Davis) et de sa seule version live donnée à Antibes durant l’été 1965… On peut aisément comprendre pourquoi ce disque plait tant aux néophytes. Cette sensation d’élévation, cette transe sublime, ce son hypnotique, cette rage mêlée de mysticisme, l’évasion est immédiate et garantie à l’écoute de ce chef-d’œuvre… Au milieu des années 60, Coltrane lutte avec les démons de la drogue et semble avoir trouvé une certaine rédemption en la personne d’un dénommé Dieu. Il le dit d’ailleurs dans les notes de pochette, datant cette révélation à 1957. Même s’il suinte des pores de la peau de ce grand disque enregistré le 9 décembre 1964 par le producteur Bob Thiele au Studio Van Gelder d’Englewood Cliffs dans le New Jersey, le mysticisme grandissant du saxophoniste s’appuie ici sur un jazz modal lui offrant un vaste champ de liberté mélodique. Les effluves du free passent ça-et-là mais le thème est avant tout épuré à l’extrême. Découpé en quatre chapitres (Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance et Psalm) magnifié par ses trois fidèles gardes du corps (le pianiste McCoy Tyner, le batteur Elvin Jones et le contrebassiste Jimmy Garrison), cet album-prière ne vise qu’à l’élévation de l’âme certes, et à ce que l’auditeur ressentira en se laissant porter par cette fulgurance à la fois recueillie et sereine, mais aussi exacerbée. Car mysticisme, mystère, transe mais aussi sérénité se succèdent ici avec une grande fluidité. Toutes les libertés harmoniques du disque annoncent les mutations futures de la musique du saxophoniste. A Love Supreme demeure sans doute l’ode la plus spirituelle d’un Coltrane qui s’orientera vers un free jazz souvent extrême durant les dernières années d’une vie qui s’arrêtera le 17 juillet 1967 à seulement 40 ans… © MZ/Qobuz
