Virtuosity on the guitar is expressed in a thousand ways. Some pioneers have defined the codes of Blues, Rock and a number of other genres. After the generation of Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Buddy Holly and Buddy Guy, the guitarists definitely took the flame during the 60s, 70s and 80s under their names (Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani) or within their respective groups (Brian May in Queen, Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin, Mark Knopfler in Dire Straits, Keith Richard and the Rolling Stones…). Then the woman took over, from Ana Popovic’s Blues Rock, to the virtuoso tapping of Kaki King. Today, a whole generation of musicians breath this love for the guitar, pushing their imagination towards ever more modern and innovative music, with artists like Jonny Greenwood in Radiohead, Anne Clarke, aka St. Vincent and her eccentric pop, even the novel relationship of Anna Calvi and her instrument. Here, we present to you the legends of today and yesteryear on the guitar, as we wait for the new generation to be born.

Queen: A Balanced Band

by Jean-Pierre Sabouret

The film “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which was screening in cinemas in October 2018, is a reminder of what Freddie Mercury would always say: Queen isn’t just about him, it’s about a band of four exceptional individuals. This is exactly what Brian May and Roger Taylor (without John Deacon, who retired) have been trying to demonstrate since the death of their flamboyant singer on November 21, 1991.

The rebirth of a group

Quite unexpectedly, Brian May and Roger Taylor kept Queen going after Freddie Mercury's death. They released Made in Heaven, which used Mercury’s voice from previously unreleased recordings. Brian May defended the dynamic behind Queen’s fifteenth album, which they had chosen not to release in 1995: “If I had to pick out one album in particular, it’d have to be Made in Heaven, despite everything. It’s an album which was produced with so much love… We only had Freddie’s wonderful drafts to work with, but we paid attention to every little detail to ensure that the result was as good as possible and to pay one last tribute to him. In my eyes, it’s a Queen album just as much as the others are. What I love the most is that it sounds like we’re all together in the studio and that we’re having the time of our lives, even if that wasn’t the case. It’s the result of pulling together all these different elements that could have stayed archived forever at the bottom of some box. I think that the album exudes a sense of peace and recollection. It’s not in a hard rock vein. But there’s an intensity and depth in each piece, whatever the style. For us, as well as for everybody who loved him, it was one last chance to hear Freddie's extraordinary voice."

Elton John tried to encourage May and Taylor to revive Queen under another name, saying “It must be like having a Ferrari in the garage waiting for a driver”. Hesitant at first, the two musicians called up a singer who was one of their main influences with his group Free. It took a professional of Paul Rodgers’ calibre to restore their confidence and their taste for over-the-top concerts. "I didn't miss being part of a group that could fill the stadiums", said May. “When Freddie left us, I missed him more than anything, but there weren’t many times that I’d say to myself “It’s such a shame that we can’t keep Queen alive”. It wasn’t an obsession. Anyway, I had had a very happy life. And then, bit by bit, someone speaks to you, then another, and in the end, we found ourselves in the same rhythm as when we were kids and you start to think it might just be possible to start a band. When we met Paul Rodgers, everything fell into place and that same excitement came back again. We found ourselves playing in Ukraine in front of 200,000 people for the first time… Thank God, we were lucky enough to be able to go back and be greeted by audiences in the most incredible places. And I assure you it's not about the money. I really do have everything I need when it comes to that. I’d like to add that we’ve always donated a large part of the profits to charities such as the Mercury Phoenix Trust or the Mandela Foundation..."

Neither Paul Rodgers nor Adam Lambert, who took over in 2011, have ever tried to outshine Freddie Mercury, though Brian May and Roger Taylor often have to justify themselves to the media to continue to defend the group. "We've moved beyond the dark patch when we were too overwhelmed to even think about doing anything else" admits May. "When you lose a loved one, after a while, the pain of them being gone eventually gives way to a more comforting feeling where you feel happy to have had the chance, for years, to share so much with someone who’s had an extraordinary life. Now, the thoughts that we have about Freddie are all positive and encouraging. I have a feeling Freddy’s still with us.... Or that he's never far away. We were so close and worked together intensely for so many years. His face always pops up in the corner of my mind to give his opinion on what we do. I feel his presence. Whatever we've been doing since his disappearance, if I don't feel like Freddie would’ve liked it, I don’t do it."
