Martin Nonstatic

Ambient/dub techno producer Martin Nonstatic creates soothing, enveloping soundscapes inspired by the majestic landscapes of his Austrian home, with dubby basslines and crispy beats that take the listener on a tranquil journey, as on his epic 2017 album Ligand. Born Martin van Rossum in the Netherlands in 1976, he moved with his family near Köln, Germany when he was 12 years old. Growing up with the sounds of ambient, techno, and drum'n'bass led to his interest in synthesizers and production when he was in his late teens. At first concentrating on live performance, he recorded tracks only for family and friends. His first commercial release came in 2011, with the digital-only tech-house EP "Inner Viewing" on Nuwax. Switching to an ambient/dub techno style, he released further EPs on the likes of Silent Season, Entropy, Dewtone, and Subspiele, which put out his debut album, Back on Earth, in 2014. That year, he moved to Austria and also released his sophomore album, Inner Landscapes, on Bine. Following its release, he found a home on ambient label Ultimae, where he felt his music fit right in. 2015's Granite was his most mature and acclaimed album to date, described by critics as his "coming of age." The following year saw him release that rarest of things in electronic music, the live album: Nebulae was recorded live at the planetarium in Bochum, Germany. 2017 saw the release of his most highly achieved album to date, the epic Ligand; two years later he collaborated with Sweden's Esko Barba as Eskostatic for the IDM-oriented Serpentines and Valleys.
