Blake Hazard

Raised in Burlington, Vermont, Blake Hazard is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who briefly played in the indie rock band Starhustler with Jason Hatfield (Juliana's brother) during the late '90s. She then set out on her own and played shows alongside musicians like Helium's Mike Leahy, Shawn King Devlin, and Brian Dunton. After taking time to finish a degree from Harvard, she befriended John Dragonetti and went on to tour with his project Jack Drag. Meanwhile, working on music of her own, Hazard began to switch up her signature indie pop bliss with a rawer mood and vision. Dragonetti assisted Hazard in recording her subsequent debut album, Little Airplane, which appeared on Kimchee in July 2002. Hazard and Dragonetti became romantically involved during this period and soon relocated from the East Coast to Los Angeles, only to split up in 2005. The event fueled their respective songwriting, however, and since Hazard still recorded her material at Dragonetti's studio, the two began sharing the songs they'd penned about their breakup. Apparently, this worked to rekindle their affection, and the two got back together, recorded their breakup songs, and ultimately married. Calling themselves the Submarines, they released the resulting Declare a New State! on the Nettwerk label in 2006. Honeysuckle Weeks followed in May 2008, featuring decidedly happier songs and an increased emphasis on Hazard's lead vocals. Several songs from these albums were licensed for commercials, film, and television, including shows like Nip/Tuck, Gossip Girl, and Grey’s Anatomy, and the film Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. Still with Nettwerk, the full-length Love Notes/Letter Bombs and The Shoelaces followed in 2011, with the Submarines' newer songs also appearing onscreen. In 2013, Hazard released her second solo LP, The Eleanor Islands. Substantially a breakup album in response to the sudden end of her marriage (and band), it was recorded with Sam Cohen in his studio in Brooklyn. Hazard declined to tour in support of the album. She went on to contribute vocals to records by acts like the M Machine and Eligh & Amp Live before spending over a year living abroad in Istanbul. After returning to L.A., she started work on her third full-length, Possibilities at Sea. Self-released in 2017, it was produced by Thom Monahan of the Pernice Brothers, who'd produced for the likes of Vetiver, Fruit Bats, and Peter Bjorn and John.
