Born Ama Serwah Genfi in New York on July 4, 1994, the Ghanaian American singer, songwriter and producer is better-known by her stage name Amaarae. She is an afro-fusion/R&B artist that is recognized for her work focusing on representation and gender in music. She was raised between Atlanta, Georgia and Accra, Ghana. At the age of 13, she became more interested in music when she composed her first song. When she entered high school, she started making mixtapes and then became an intern at a recording studio by the age of 17. During her college/university years, she worked on her songwriting skills before she returned to Ghana. After collaborating with artists like AYLØ, Dex Kwasi, Yaw P, and Kay-Ara, she released her first EP, Passionfruit Summers, in 2017. The EP featured the focus track, “Fluid”, which brought her to the attention of a wider audience. While working on her own music, she continued to collaborate with the likes of Odunsi, M3NSA, Mina, Santi, Kojey Radical, and Stonebwoy. Amaarae was named one of Apple Music Africa’s Favorite New Artists in April 2018. In 2019, she released the singles “Spend Some Time” (featuring Wande Coal) and “Like It”. In November 2020, she released her debut album The Angel You Don’t Know.
