There are very few recordings of Mascagni's Iris, of which only Cavalleria Rusticana is still played. He was, however, the author of some fifteen operas in a rather eclectic style which was influenced by verism among other things. Premiered in 1898, Iris, an opera in three acts, is part of a Japanese-inspired fashion which would culminate in Puccini's Madama Butterfly six years later, whose success would overshadow Mascagni's work. This new recording, in the absence of stars, makes it possible to reassess this opera and to repair the injustice of the oblivion into which it fell for such a long time. Yet the orchestration is light, the exotic touches discreet, and Mascagni's melodic vein never fails. Made in Berlin in 2021, this concert recording celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Berliner Operngruppe. Founded in 2010 by conductor Felix Krieger, its aim is to present operas outside the usual repertoire. The productions are presented in concert in a semi-stage production and then later published. © François Hudry / Qobuz

Marek Janowski and the Dresdner Philharmonie present a new recording of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, the "verismo" opera par excellence. Mascagni’s debut opera turned him into an overnight world star, and continues to captivate listeners today. Even if the depiction of simple village folk and the direct emotional appeal of Cavalleria rusticana were initially greeted as a welcome alternative to the gods, intellectual pretences and dense orchestral textures of Wagner, Mascagni’s score in fact has many more symphonic qualities than is usually acknowledged. Marek Janowski, a champion of Wagnerian opera and German symphonic music, is the ideal candidate to demonstrate those qualities. He does this together with the Dresdner Philharmonie, the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir and a cast of outstanding vocal soloists, including Melody Moore as Santuzza, Brian Jagde as Turridu and Lester Lynch in the role of Alfio. © Pentatone

It is hard not to be moved by this famous version of Cavalleria Rusticana, recorded in the 1960s by a Karajan at the height of his powers, with some of the greatest artists of an epoch that was uncommonly favoured by the gods of the lyrical arts. Karajan conducts Mascagni in a manner befitting a genius like Mozart or Verdi. Under his baton, Milan's La Scala orchestra sounds with an opulence that recalls Berlin, and a kind of soft legato. Once again we can admire Carlo Bergonzi's beautiful timbre, his wonderful accent, and above all, the tragic, poetic and fiery intensity that he brings to his character, Turridu. His personality and radiant voice leave his partners far behind, in spite of the volcanic presence and enormous voice of Fiorenza Cossotto. The sound quality is an integral part of the pleasure enjoyed at each new listening of this supremely widely-renowned recording, thanks to a stereophonic technique that offers a perfect balance of voice and orchestra. A classic record like this never gets old. © François Hudry/Qobuz Fiorenza Cossotto, mezzo-soprano - Adriane Martino, mezzo-soprano - Maria Gracia Allegri, contralto - Carlo Bergonzi, tenor - Gian Giacomo Guelfi, baritone - Choir and Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano - Herbert von Karajan, conducting
