The kings of contrast, this German band loves to sow seeds of doubt all around them and keep people guessing. While there were ten long years between Liebe ist für alle da and Rammstein, they waited less than three years to release Zeit, much to the delight of their fans. The musicians made the most of a bad situation by taking time over the Covid lockdown to individually work on every minute detail of the album before recording it. This new release reveals a different side to this band while still respecting the sound that makes them so unique.
The band members are now all in their fifties and seem to have somewhat changed their approach to life. This new album certainly reveals a few intentional cracks in their fearless facade, making their music feel more “fragile” and less pompous than it did in the past, though it still maintains all its power. This evolution is owed in no small part to Flake’s careful keyboard work, which is beautifully embodied on songs like Zeit and Schwarz. Rammstein has lost none of its sharp sound or quirky humour, as evidenced by tracks like Dicke Titten (literally “big tits”) and Angst. Better yet, some of these songs really bring out the very best of this band, resting somewhere between Sehnsucht and Mutter—a period of time that any fan will recognise as their golden age. These Germans have never been afraid to experiment with sound, and this album is no exception. The extreme auto-tune at the end of Lügen will divide listeners as much as it will make them smile.
Aside from their radical departure from their comfort zone, Rammstein afford this album a lot of breathing space. Every listener will have their own intepretation of the closing track, Adieu... After all, the group already constructed a mausoleum in their name when they released the best of Made In Germany in 2011… © Chief Brody/Qobuz
