When Burwell visited the Coen Brothers

Carter Burwell has just put the finishing touches to the soundtrack of “Wonderstruck” by Todd Haynes. So this is a good opportunity to take a look back over the highlights of his career, which link him to the great work of the Coen brothers.

Danny Elfman in Ten Albums

From fairy tales to wacky comedies, from the most extraordinary orchestral works to understated pieces, for almost forty years now Danny Elfman has been crafting his unique sound and injecting it into Hollywood productions by the likes of Tim Burton or Gus Van Sant. We look back over ten albums from his career, exploring both his essential works and less well-known compositions.

Wilhelm Kempff: The Most Human of Pianists

An artist of another time, Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) believed in inspiration: he took on music as if it were a religion, with a respectful enthusiasm for the masters that came before him. With his velvet touch, sense of phrasing and storytelling quality, Wilhelm Kepff’s art was like that of a waking dream. Half poet, half divine, during a time when expression of emotion triumphed all. He recorded many times the works of his favourite composers, in particular his ‘god’ Beethoven, for whom Kempff is well known and left behind three complete sonatas in keeping with his own maturation and the evolution of his recording technique.
