Martinis and Bikinis was an edgy, catchy pop/rock album that expanded Sam Phillips' sonic pallette without losing sight of her melodic, layered songwriting. With Omnipop (It's Only a Fleshwound Lambcomp), the followup to Martinis and Bikinis, Phillips concentrates on creating soundscapes that are vaguely experimental and layered with effects and synthesizers, sounding unlike much of her catalog. The problem is that the soundscapes hide a lack of substance within the songs themselves. Much of the lyrics are underdeveloped and clichéd, while the music itself doesn't have the punch or hooks of her previous three albums. And that makes Omnipop a muddled, ineffective affair. A few songs sink in after repeated listens, but the album on the whole is a failed -- but honorable -- experiment.
