In 2012, Superpoze was propelled to the forefront of the French future beats scene, standing alongside artists such as Dream Koala, Phazz and Everydayz. Over the past ten years, he’s evolved into an all-round composer, producing music for Nekfeu, DJ Pone and Lomepal, collaborating with Jacques and Eddy de Pretto, even writing film soundtracks. Easy to see how he’s been keeping busy during the 5 years since his last studio album, For We the Living in 2017. Returning to the studio as a solo artist, he was a little taken aback. After having spent so much time producing music for others, he admits that he found it hard to get back into the swing of writing his own electronic compositions without lyrics.

His writer’s block was cured during a stay in Geneva, where he finally accepted that his instrumental music was capable of standing on its own. After spending a week writing using the piano, organ, glockenspiel, drums, TB-303, Rhodes, xylophone and vibraphone, he emerged with three tracks. These would go on to become the first three of his new album, and would provide the momentum for the rest. After spending the past three years unable to find a sound he was happy with and scrapping draft after draft, he finished the record in three months. Working alongside other artists for so much of his career meant that a lot of his prior work was characterised by collaboration. He managed to maintain this characteristic by getting instrumentalists to play his pieces. The end result is an album that may be less epic than his previous ones, but is far more organic. Less grandiose but more soothing; less hypnotic but more lyrical (thanks to the contribution of pianist Guillaume Ferran, a French icon of the neo-classical scene). Superpoze may have grown up and matured, but he still knows how to dazzle. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
