For Vangelis, music and science go hand in hand. A pioneer of electronic music, world-famous for the soundtracks to Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, the Greek composer has drawn his inspiration here from the sounds of the launch of the Juno space probe, which is to explore Jupiter. He composed the choral symphony Mythodea for NASA's mission to Mars in 2001, as well as the album Rosetta in 2016 (named after the space probe). In addition to the voices of the scientists involved in the launch of the probe, the listener will be treated to a much more celestial human sound in Juno to Jupiter. The Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu is a special guest on three tracks on the album. While Vangelis' musical point of view on the conquest of space is relatively conventional (solar and grandiose synths, serene and epiphanic bells), he retains his incomparable sense of melody and a constant and sincere desire to speak from the heart. Like a child fascinated by constellations and surrounded by astonishing toys/instruments, Vangelis has fun spreading sunny, positive vibes throughout this bewitching album. Even when the journey becomes more mysterious and chaotic (Jupiter Rex, Juno's Quiet Determination), a sense of wonder always prevails with Vangelis. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

10 Versions of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique

As a proper manifesto of French romanticism, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique marked the 19th century as much as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring impacted the 20th. Composed in Paris − which at the time was a global crucible for artistic creation − these two masterpieces catapulted musical language into another dimension. On December 5th, 1830 the revolutionary work of 27-year-old Hector Berlioz deeply moved the musicians present in the small room of the old academy of music, among whom were Meyerbeer and Liszt, who were impressed by the extraordinary audacity of this piece presented just three years after Beethoven’s death.

Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante, 30 years of freedom

The Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi, notably famous for his rendition of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with his ensemble Europa Galante, is one of the musicians who actively spurns the idea of separating and compartmentalising music. We take a look back at the career of one of the most versatile and open-minded classical musicians of our time, and an essential figure of baroque violin.
