Not that Deicide care, but Insineratehymm is that rarest of death metal records that fans of all heavy music have a chance to enjoy. Continuing their late-'90s trend of simplifying their music and focusing on memorable riffs and stripped down arrangements, the songs on this 2000 release each have unique qualities, and even some near-melodicism. That's not to say that bassist/vocalist and bandleader Glen Benton decided to actually sing. His patented growls and groans remain unchanged, but within the slower, more focused riffs and arrangements, his godless messages has the room needed for maximum clarity and impact. Unlike so many of his contemporaries, it isn't always necessary to read the lyrics in order to understand what he's saying -- which adds greatly to the demonic affect. Standout tracks include the almost catchy "Bible Basher" and the double-bass juggernaut "Halls of Worship." One of the strongest collections in their oeuvre, Insineratehymm is certainly one of Deicide's strongest offerings.

The Golden Age of American Death Metal

An often rejected, parodied and misinterpreted sub-genre of metal, the fierce death metal has nevertheless succeeded in garnering a significant following over the decades. Arriving in the 80s, the genre continues to evolve; from its early pursuit of the ultra-violent to its more recent incorporation of aspects from more mainstream genres. Let us look back at the origins of death metal.

Grunge in 10 Albums

Around thirty years ago, Seattle became the epicenter of the rock scene, largely thanks to grunge music. The grungy, ‘I don’t care’ attitude rose from the ashes of punk, heavy metal and alt-rock, and instantaneously went from an underground movement to a worldwide success. Perhaps too quickly embraced by the very system it rebuffed, it almost became a caricature of itself by the end of the 1990s. Let’s look back at ten albums that defined the genre.

The Past, Present and Future of Black Country Artists

For decades, country music has been largely shut off to Black artists. There have been notable, even iconic, exceptions throughout history, of course. But there are too few of those, to the point that their success was often treated as novelty. There were also too many performers who should have made it big but were forced into stereotypes that didn't comfortably fit. Fortunately, there have been signs of hope in the past few years—hope that feels like a lot more than just good intentions and lip service.
