The title track of this brief five-song EP, an exhilarating pop song with harmony vocals by folk-popper John Wesley Harding, may well be the catchiest thing Juliana Hatfield has ever written. However, the rest of the disc moves away from such giddy pop heights and into darker and more reflective areas. The controversial "Ugly" (taken, like "I See You," from Hatfield's first solo album, HEY BABE) is a quiet solo acoustic performance with lyrics of intense self-loathing delivered by Hatfield in a near whisper.
The remaining three tracks, all recorded in a one-day session produced by Lou Giordano, are stripped-down voice-and-guitar pieces with a demo-like feel that only intensifies their lyrical darkness. "Feed Me"--a slight reworking of the Blake Babies' "Boiled Potato"--is particularly striking, a positively chilling first person account of anorexia. The sunny title track aside, I SEE YOU makes for uneasy but rewarding listening.
