After 2016's Hero won her big awards from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association, Maren Morris took a left turn with the Top 40 pop smash "The Middle," a collaboration with electro producer Zedd. So it's no surprise that her follow-up blurs genre lines. "I'm cooking up my own flavor...making a mess straight outta scratch," she sings on the sassy "Flavor," which uses bro-country guitars and moody pop atmospherics to hammer home the point. There are some moments of purity: the terrific "All My Favorite People" ropes in country duo Brothers Osborne and lifts its melody from Dolly Parton's "9 to 5". With its slide guitars and shuffling drums, "To Hell and Back" would be right at home on a Miranda Lambert record. But mostly, Morris channels the queen of the middle, Sheryl Crow, as on the bouncy "Feels" and the folksy "A Song for Everything."  She also adopts the social themes du jour, calling for unity on "Common" (which features a guest turn from Brandi Carlile) and sisterhood support on "Girl." Morris tries hard at being the popular girl, and it works. © Qobuz

In your panoramas...
The Past, Present and Future of Black Country Artists

For decades, country music has been largely shut off to Black artists. There have been notable, even iconic, exceptions throughout history, of course. But there are too few of those, to the point that their success was often treated as novelty. There were also too many performers who should have made it big but were forced into stereotypes that didn't comfortably fit. Fortunately, there have been signs of hope in the past few years—hope that feels like a lot more than just good intentions and lip service. This tribute explores the history, and promising future, of Black artists in country music.

Merle Haggard, the bad boy of country music

Alcohol, prison, drugs and poverty. Merle Haggard, who experienced all four, spent his life singing about America’s outcasts and dropouts. Creator of the Bakersfield sound, he stripped country music down to make its message even more striking.

10 Legends of the Blues

For over a century, blues is still nourishing pop music of all kinds and producing great records. It's time to take a look back at the classics with ten historic blues musicians.
