For their first full-fledged major-label album, the Derailers teamed with producer Dave Alvin -- a legend in Americana circles -- and crafted another fine, straight-ahead country record in Full Western Dress. The group never makes any apologies about being an unabashed traditionalist honky tonk group, equally comfortable with twangy Bakersfield, gritty honky tonk, and western swing. It's easy to spot the group's influences, from Buck Owens to Dwight Yoakam (or even the Beatles on the Merseybeat singalong of "Just to Spend the Night With You"), but the key to the record's success is that the Derailers never become mired in tradition, they simply play the music as if it was still vital and relevant, which is exactly what makes it vital and relevant. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the 12 songs are all very strong, whether they're covers or new originals that sound as if they're classics. It's a classy, inspired release that is much stronger and more charming than the average Americana release.

In your panoramas...
The Women of Nashville

It's not easy to elbow your way through the macho Music City scene, the birthplace of country music, when you're a woman. Over the years, some of them have nevertheless managed to shift lines and attitudes, like these ten pioneers and revolutionaries who have put – even stamped – their boots on Nashville's table.

Outlaw Country: Nashville Uprising

In the early 1970’s, a group of musicians from Nashville radically challenged the city’s musical tradition, its codes, its smooth productions and its clichés. With Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and a few other long-haired rebels who were deeply influenced by rock and roll, this new trend defied country music’s conservatism.

Americana, America Through its Roots

The title may sound like a nebulous marketing ploy, and yet for about twenty years, Americana had been summarizing this blend of rock, country, blues and rhythm ‘n’ blues. And like in every big family, you’ll find almost every type of person: the rebellious daughter, the cultivated uncle, the agitated father, the driven cousin, etc.
