With Gossip now stowed away, Beth Ditto can spread her own wings. Five years after A Joyful Noise, the last album of her now-defunct group, the charismatic singer has released her first, and somewhat eclectic, solo album. At 36 years old, the self-proclaimed "fat lesbian feminist from Arkansas" intends above all to show the breadth of her talent and the variety of the styles that she loves. Clearly, the essence of her work remains visceral rock. Gall and energy, punchy rhythms and guitars, Fake Sugar is hardly a step into a new age phase. Beth Ditto surprises, on the other hand, when she tackles softer, more soul-influenced sounds. Her punk attitude is eclipsed here by music that's a little more nuanced and introspective (Love in Real Life). But at the end of the day it's above all the power of her muscular, colourful pop that makes the album so much fun. Sincere and without artifice: this solo record is as enjoyable as can be. © CM/Qobuz
