The Drums have very much changed their sound and some early fans will no doubt be unhappy with such a change. In 2010, the duo formed between Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham, transfixed indie pop with their debut eponymous album, with a large offering of explosive surf hits of which the first was Let’s Go Surfing. The Smiths-sounding rockers with their blond and brown locks cruised along boasting an 80s-inspired pop sound built for the dancefloor. Today, Pierce remains the only original member in the band. The simple structures that led to the success of Portamento (2011) had all but lost their clout with the release of Encyclopedia (2014). Such simplicity has now made way for more complex, darker melodies (Loner, Kiss it Away, Blip of Joy) that are carried by drawn-out, mournful vocals (I Wanna Go Back). Such intense lyricism reaches its peak with the guitar ballad Nervous. All in all, it is without a doubt that when Pierce is at his most musically simple, and hones his bass and rhythmic sections like in 626 Bedford Avenue and Body Chemistry, that the formula works best. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
