Strangely, the symphonies of Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) are a less popular recording choice today than they were in the 1970s or 1980s (perhaps an effect of the relative standardisation of orchestral sounds across the globe?). Here, they’re resurrected by the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel, one year after their flamboyant version of Gustav Mahler’s Eighth symphony.

This Venezuelan conductor arranges this body of Czech work firmly within the tradition of Brahm’s symphonies. His gesture is sparingly spiced and coloured, and he seeks extraordinary legibility of form, rich melodic themes and simple sonic landscapes and atmospheres. His interpretation of Eighth Symphony, a strange adagio with a versatile and rhapsodic pre-Mahlerian character, bears witness to this. Dudamel has a knack for creating dense textures, with the balance tipping towards the strings. This stunning release will make the perfect autumn companion. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
