Hay muchos pianistas buenos, algunos pianistas excelentes, y luego está Martha Argerich. Nacida en 1941 en Buenos Aires, Argentina, este satélite libre del planeta pianístico –que hubiera terminado siendo médico si la música no la hubiera atrapado tanto– no hizo prácticamente nada semejante a los demás, y no parece que le haya ido mal. Sin embargo, no hay ninguna integral en su impresionante discografía, tiene un calendario terriblemente caprichoso, y además sostiene que nunca firmará contratos, para no tener que verse afectada por las condiciones de cualquiera de ellos –por anulación (a veces unos nervios insuperables podrían ser la causa) o cambio de programa–; sus cachés van desde desde cero hasta sumas locas, tiene un repertorio extraordinariamente ecléctico, y la flor y nata de los solistas de su época como compañeros de música de cámara, de Daniel Barenboim a Gidon Kremer: he aquí algunos rasgos reveladores de la personalidad independiente, impredecible, impetuosa y juvenil de Martha Argerich que vive la música como un placer – y la familia como un entorno muy abierto con tres padres (como Charles Dutoit y Stephen Kovacevich) para tres hijas. Puesta en manos del formidable pianista italiano Vincenzo Scaramuzza, Martha Argerich conoce el éxito desde la edad de siete años cuando dio su verdadero primer concierto en el Teatro San Martín de Buenos Aires, donde interpretó el Concierto nº 20 de Mozart y el Concierto nº 1 de Beethoven. Después de emigrar a Europa a la edad de 14 años, contará entre sus mentores con Friedrich Gulda en Viena –su principal maestro, al que estuvo siguiendo durante 18 meses–, Nikita Magaloff en Ginebra y Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli al que fue a buscar durante una crisis de confianza a la edad de veinte años cuando ya hacía tiempo que era una estrella internacional. Es cierto que solo tomó cuatro «lecciones» con el maestro italiano, pero sin duda este encuentro fue fundamental ya que rápidamente pudo reencontrar el camino a los grandes escenarios, las grandes orquestas y los grandes compañeros para nunca más descender de su pináculo, con la excepción de unos pocos paréntesis de retiro y silencio.
