El sonido característico de Joni Mitchell, con sus acordes de guitarra abiertos, sus dulces melodías folk-pop y su voz cristalina proporcionan un cierto marco optimista a unas situaciones que se estaban complicando. Canciones como “Ladies of the Canyon” abrazan las alegrías de la vida familiar y la creatividad doméstica junto con un deseo innato de ser libre para perseguir los propios deseos. “Big Yellow Taxi” denuncia el consumismo a un ritmo frenético, “Circle Game” advierte sobre la trampa de la nostalgia.
