A finales de los años 60, los barrios Laurel Canyon y Topanga Canyon de Los Ángeles fueron caldo de cultivo para la polinización musical cruzada, cuando se formaron supergrupos, se reunieron leyendas del country-rock y del folk, y los experimentalistas se divertían junto a las estrellas del pop. Pero 1970 sería un año de cambios: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young lanzaron una música preciosa y luego se rompieron en pedazos (igual que los Flying Burrito Brothers); la ruptura de la pareja dorada Graham Nash y Joni Mitchell inspiró una de las mejores canciones de ruptura amorosa de todos los tiempos; John Phillips reveló un lado oscuro después de las alegres armonías de los Mamas and the Papas.
