Acerca de la Playlist

Verve es un sello de jazz estadounidense, en la actualidad propiedad de Universal Group. Fundado en 1956 por Norman Granz, en él reagrupó los catálogos de sus primeros sellos discográficos Clef Records (1946) y Norgran Records (1953), así como el catálogo, publicado bajo licencia, de Mercury. Durante las décadas de 1950 y 1960, el sello desarrolló una producción llena de contrastes colaborando con grandes figuras del jazz, como el excéntrico Spike Jones, que lanzó en 1956 el primer LP, Dinner Music For People Who Aren’t Very Hungry, y otros álbumes de éxito de Shelley Berman en concierto. En 1961, Granz vendió Verve a MGM por 3 millones de dólares. Creed Taylor, productor designado, tomó el mando con un enfoque mucho más comercial, cancelando varios contratos. Introdujo la bossa-nova en el catálogo con el LP «Jazz Samba» de Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd así como con Getz/Gilberto. Se rodeó de nuevas colaboraciones, como la de los arreglistas Claus Ogerman (que participó en unos sesenta álbumes entre 1963 y 1967) y Oliver Nelson. Poco antes de abandonar Verve en 1967, Taylor supervisó la creación de un departamento de música folk (Verve Folkways, más tarde Verve Forecast) que desaparecería a principios de los años setenta. Además del jazz, el foco principal de su producción, Verve dio la bienvenida durante los años sesenta a un puñado de artistas de rock, entre ellos Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, The Mothers of Invention y The Blues Project.
