Milagrosa, y desde sus álbumes más antiguos, por ejemplo, su espléndida Traviata de 1967, grabada en Roma bajo la dirección algo personal de Georges Prêtre. La Caballé tiene treinta y tres años cuando graba esta versión mítica con un Carlo Bergonzi radiante y un Sherill Milnes al inicio de su carrera. Su timbre muelle, su encarnación del papel, sus sonidos hilados sublimes (Addio del passato, [disco 2, corte 11, de su lectura en Qobuz] sin los cortes habituales tienen una belleza que provoca lágrimas). Con la joven Caballé, la emoción nace a partir del soplo y de la sencillez de la línea heredada de la tradición belcantista. Pero su larga carrera nos depara muchas otras sorpresas. Nacida en una familia muy modesta y muy religiosa de Barcelona (acaso no todos, fuera de España, saben que su nombre proviene de la célebre Virgen Negra de Montserrat, santa patrona de Cataluña), destaca rápidamente en el conservatorio de la ciudad, maravillada y encantada por su precocidad. Y fue en Basilea, donde, sustituta durante dos largas temporadas esperando su hora, se impone de la noche a la mañana, al remplazar a una colega indispuesta. Y ya conocemos el resto: la Caballé encadena los éxitos y las encarnaciones más diversas. En 1965, su Lucrezia Borgia de Donizetti causa sensación en el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York, cuando sustituye repentinamente a la gran Marilyn Horne. Gracias a su prudencia y su técnica vocal excepcional, Montserrat Caballé canta en todos los escenarios del planeta, interpretando a princesas y reinas con un éxito creciente. Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Spontini, Verdi, Puccini, pero también, Mozart, Gounod y Massenet son sus compositores fetiches y el mundo entero anhela escucharla. Al final de su carrera, hará incluso una incursión en el repertorio wagneriano. Cuando empezó la moda de las cantantes esbeltas, desencarnadas y con la edad de sus papeles, el impresionante físico de Caballé hubiera podido apartarla de los escenarios pero su presencia vocal seguía imponiéndose de manera absoluta. Su carrera discográfica inmensa abarca la totalidad de su repertorio. Al empezar a transformarse su voz en los primeros años 80, Montserrat Caballé acentúa el lado dramático y teatral de sus personajes y diversifica su repertorio, atreviéndose a enfrentarse al crossover, particularmente con Freddie Mercury. También se divierte mucho en el escenario al interpretar una jocosa e irresistible Madama Cortese, en El viaje a Reims de Rossini, bajo la dirección de Claudio Abbado, une producción del Festival de Pesaro, cuya fama y poder de seducción no han mermado. A pesar de una precaria salud desde muy joven y de una perpetua angustia causada por el miedo escénico que provocaron numerosas anulaciones, Montserrat Caballé desarrolló una de las carreras más brillantes del siglo XX. Lo que refleja el disco, con verdaderos milagros como las grabaciones de Turandot bajo la dirección de Zubin Mehta, interpretando a una Liù extremadamente frágil y conmovedora. Norma, claro está, y también la Giovanna d’Arco, obra poco conocida de Verdi bajo la dirección eléctrica de James Levine.
