Vashti
Vashti (full name Vashti Bunyan) is one of the more mysterious figures in the Immediate Records orbit for having hardly gotten even a single out. Indeed, she is best-known to those who have seen the documentary movie Tonite Let's All Make Love in London, and that's not exactly a legion of filmgoers. Vashti was one of Andrew Oldham's many discoveries of the mid-'60s. She was given a secondary Mick Jagger/Keith Richards song, "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind," to release as a single (produced by Oldham) for Decca in 1965. She jumped to EMI/Columbia the following year, for "Train Song" b/w "Love Song," without success. Oldham didn't give up on her, however, and Vashti made numerous recordings over the next two years, from 1966 through 1968. Despite these efforts, Vashti's sole release during that period was "Winter Is Blue," which appeared on the soundtrack of the Peter Whitehead documentary film Tonite Let's All Make Love in London. She sang backing vocals on one song from the second Twice As Much album, That's All, but frustration over her lack of released recordings under her own name finally caused Vashti to leave Oldham's orbit as a client. She signed with Philips, where she released an album under her full name of Vashti Bunyan. A few odd tracks have surfaced on recent compilations of Jagger/Richards songs cut by others, and the supposed unearthing of the Immediate Records masters may allow us to hear some of the records that Oldham didn't release.
