Uji

Argentinean producer Uji (Luis Maurette) makes lush, low-key dance music that draws from global folkloric traditions and instrumentation, particularly music from Latin America, Africa, and indigenous cultures. First known as a member of folktronica duo Lulacruza, Maurette began releasing music as Uji during the 2010s, linking with trendsetting digital cumbia label ZZK Records for the full-lengths Alborada (2018) and Timebeing (2022). Luis Maurette was born in Buenos Aires, but he's lived a nomadic lifestyle since the age of two, residing in various countries throughout North and South America. He attended the Berklee School of Music, where he studied sound design and synthesis and incorporated field recordings of indigenous ceremonies and natural sounds into his music. He formed the duo Lulacruza with Alejandra Ortiz, and they released four albums and an EP between 2006 and 2015, blending earthly sounds and folk instrumentation with ambient electronics and contemporary songwriting. Maurette then began making more beat-focused work as Uji, remixing a Nicola Cruz track ("Invocación") in 2017 and releasing the single "Romper el Hechizo" with Fémina as well as appearing on El Búho's album Balance. Adoro, an EP with Sof Tot, appeared in 2018, preceding Alborada, a solo full-length issued by ZZK Records. Cruz in turn remixed the album's single, "Jenga." Marimbas del Guapi, an EP with Afro-Colombian family group Dinastía Torres, appeared at the end of 2020. Uji's second album, Timebeing, arrived in 2022, accompanied by a short film directed by Jazmin Calcarami.
