The Dead South

Fusing a gritty punk ethos with traditional bluegrass and old-time string band music, the Dead South hail from Saskatchewan's prairie-bordered capital city, Regina. After finding some success in Europe with their 2014 debut, the band broke through in North America with their Billboard-charting sophomore LP, Illusion & Doubt. Their third set, 2019's Sugar & Joy, fared even better, topping the Bluegrass chart and leading to the release of their first live album, 2021's Served Live. After a covers project, the Dead South returned with their fourth studio set, 2024's Chains & Stakes, which they recorded in Mexico City. The Dead South formed in 2012, combining the talents of Regina musicians Nate Hilts (lead vocals, guitar, mandolin), Scott Pringle (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Colton Crawford (banjo), and Danny Kenyon (cello, vocals). After debuting in 2013 with the five-song The Ocean Went Mad and We Were to Blame EP, the band recorded its first full-length, Good Company; it was picked up in 2014 by German indie Devil Duck Records, which sent the Dead South on a number of overseas tours during the next couple of years. For its follow-up, 2016's Illusion & Doubt, the band worked with Regina producer Jason Plumb and signed with Toronto label Curve Music. It was a breakthrough release for the Dead South, reaching the Top Five on Billboard's bluegrass chart and raising their profile significantly. Showing their crossover versatility, they collaborated with Canadian hip-hop artist Rich Kidd on an updated version of the 2014 song "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company," which was released in the summer of 2017. The band's fourth album, Sugar & Joy, arrived in October 2019 and landed at number one on Billboard's Bluegrass chart. It served as their debut for Six Shooter Records which also handled the 2021 concert album Served Live. That following year, the Dead South embarked on a double-EP covers project, Easy Listening for Jerks, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, that saw them reworking songs by the Carter Family, the Doors, and Misfits. For their fourth studio album, the group traveled to Mexico City, working with producer Jimmy Nutt at Panoram Studios. Chains & Stakes appeared on Six Shooter in February 2024.
