SLV

Mysterious Berlin techno producer SLV chooses anonymity over publicity, preferring to let his music do the talking. Combining powerful, heavy beats with melancholy melodies, it ranges from the out-and-out club bangers of his debut album Origin of Light to the lush ambient textures of his 2019 follow-up, Berlin: A Portrait in Music. Little is known of SLV's identity except that he was supposedly born and still lives in East Berlin. His stark monochrome publicity photos show a dark-haired, bearded, serious-looking young man, seemingly in his mid- to late-twenties, perhaps with something of the Middle East about his features. He refuses to do interviews, preferring to let his music do the talking. SLV debuted in 2016 on Virgo with the Gizeh EP, a remarkably accomplished first release that combined muted percussion with plangent melodies in a style reminiscent of early-'90s ambient techno. Thereafter, all of his releases, bar his debut album, appeared on Soma. His debut for the Glasgow label, "Satellite" (also 2016), was in a similar vein, but with somewhat harder percussion and a darker, more sinister tone. His subsequent EPs for Soma upped the ante, becoming increasingly dancefloor-focused without altogether losing the melancholy aura. His debut full-length album, 2018's Origin of Light on Virgo, was the apex of this style, with both straight-up bangers and smooth, lush interludes. The following year, Soma released his second album, Berlin: A Portrait in Music. Forgoing the beats altogether for a tranquil ambient journey, it painted a pensive and beautiful portrait of his home city. A remix 12" featuring reworks by Setaoc Mass, Conforce, and Stanislav Tolkachev followed some months later.
