Segun Akinola

The soundtrack work of British-Nigerian composer Segun Akinola has graced numerous high-profile BBC shows with his eloquently composed pieces, and he scored the 2018 Jodie Whittaker-fronted Doctor Who. Growing up with a love of music and movies, Akinola learned the piano and drums as a youngster before realizing his dream of being able to combine his love of both mediums. An alumnus of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the National Film and Television School, where he completed an MA in Composing for Film and Television, Akinola started to make a name for himself scoring various short films and documentaries. In 2016 he landed the composition work for the BBC's Black and British: A Forgotten History series. and he also scored his first feature-length film, Shola Amoo's A Moving Image. The following year he was listed as one of BAFTA's Breakthrough Brits and continued to work with the BBC, scoring a number of documentaries including Expedition Volcano and The Human Body: Secrets of Your Life. Over the next year, more work on short films and television followed before Akinola's contemporary take on orchestral composing was picked by the BBC to score the 2018 version of Doctor Who. 2019 saw Akinola once again team up with Amoo for his second feature length project, The Last Tree.
