Philip Edward Fisher

Pianist Philip Edward Fisher has a varied repertory and has performed internationally, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He has recorded for the Chandos and Naxos labels. Fisher was born in Birmingham, England, in 1979. He took up the piano at age nine, and just a year later, he gave his first public recital. He studied at first with Philip Martin. At 12, he performed the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, Op. 102, at Symphony Hall in Birmingham. Fisher attended the Purcell School and was accepted into the keyboard studio of Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music in London. There, he also took lessons from Boris Berman, Stephen Kovacevich, and Stephen Hough, among others. In 2001, Fisher won the Julius Isserlis Scholarship from the Royal Philharmonic Society of London, enabling him to travel to New York and study at the Juilliard School. His principal teachers there were Joseph Kalichstein and Jerome Lowenthal. His New York debut came at Alice Tully Hall in the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30. Fisher made his debut recording in 2010 on the Naxos label, performing Handel's keyboard suites on the piano. Fisher has appeared at major venues in his native U.K. (Wigmore Hall, the Barbican) and in the U.S. (Merkin Hall at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall), and he has toured western Europe and appeared as far afield as Ukraine, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. He has a strong commitment to contemporary music and has collaborated with such composers as Ronald Stevenson, Thomas Adès, and Arvo Pärt. In 2006, with the New York Miniaturist Ensemble, he gave the world premiers of Karlheinz Stockhausen's First Natural Durations for solo piano. Fisher is in demand as a chamber musician, having appeared with such musicians as the Brodsky Quartet, violinist Augustin Hadelich, and trombonist Joseph Alessi. His festival appearances include those at Music@Menlo, the Beethoven Chamber Music Festival, and the Kyoto International Music Festival in Japan. Fisher made several albums for the Chandos label in the early 2010s, including 2011's Piano Works by the Mighty Handful, and he has continued to record for Naxos, issuing a second volume of Handel keyboard works in 2015. In 2023, he returned on Naxos with the album John Corigliano: Complete Solo Piano Music.
