Nurit Stark

Violinist Nurit Stark has been especially active in Germany, focusing most of her activity on contemporary music. She is also a notable educator. Stark was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1979. She was a youthful prodigy, and at 16, she performed Paganini's difficult Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. She studied with Haim Taub at the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv, going for further work at the Juilliard School in New York with Robert Mann, the Musikhochschule Cologne with the Alban Berg Quartet, and finally, the University of the Arts in Berlin with Ilan Gronich. Major prizes helped launch Stark's career, including those at the George Enescu Competition in Bucharest, the Premio Trio die Trieste Chamber Music Competition in Italy, and the Leopold Mozart Violin Competition in Augsburg, Germany. Stark launched her recording career in 2009 with an album on the Claves label, featuring music for violin and piano by Busoni and Enescu. Her duet partner on that release was pianist Cédric Pescia, with whom she has continued to perform frequently, both as a duo and in the Trio Stark that they created. Stark has appeared as a concerto soloist with such major ensembles as the Munich Radio Symphony, the Bremen Philharmonic, and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, as well as the Israel Philharmonic. She has also been guest concertmaster with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, and as a chamber player, with Pescia, soprano Caroline Melzer, and others, she has appeared at festivals including the Donaueschinger Musiktage in Germany, the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, and the Davos Festival in Switzerland. Stark has appeared at such major world concert venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Stark is widely recognized as a champion of contemporary music, having worked with such composers as Sofia Gubaidulina, György Kurtág, Valentin Silvestrov, and Peter Eötvös on the creation and performance of new works. Her recording career has focused on 20th century music, although she also joined Pescia for an album of chamber music by Clara and Robert Schumann on Claves in 2015. Stark has also recorded for BIS, where she released the album Bartók, Ligeti, Veress, Eötvös in 2022. She has been professor of violin at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart since 2019.
