Even with references to mainstream stars like Donna Summer, Prince, Sade, and Beyoncé, they wouldn't be out of place on similarly progressive labels such as Hyperdub, Night Slugs, and Modern Love beside releases from the likes of Cooly G, Kelela, and Andy Stott. Based in Prince George's County, Maryland, the vocalist and producer started performing as a youngster and sang in church and at school. After she started college, her creative energy shifted to poetry and songwriting. She made her recorded debut on NON in 2015 with the Chino Amobi collaboration "Power Cuts." Hivemind, an EP led by an update of Sade's "Jezebel" that rendered the source material nearly undetectable beyond the lyrics, followed in 2016. Fantasii, a full-length recorded for Rabit's Halcyon Veil label, appeared the next year, acknowledged as one of 2017's best albums by publications such as The Wire, The Quietus, and FACT. ~ Andy Kellman
