Idioma disponible: inglésGerman pianist Martin Helmchen studied piano from the age of six, and he was enrolled in the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Musikgymnasium, the first student from West Berlin to be admitted. He attended the Hochschule für Musik "Hans Eisler," where he studied with Galina Iwanzowa, and he continued his education at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, where he worked with Arie Vardi. Among the competitions he won were the 2001 Clara Haskil International Piano Competition and the 2003 International Kissinger KlavierOlymp Competition, and in 2006 he won both the Crédit Suisse Award and the ECHO Klassik Prize. As a soloist, he has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra, among other major orchestras. An active accompanist and chamber musician, Helmchen has performed with his wife, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Heinrich Schiff, Sabine Meyer, Gidon Kremer, Julia Fischer, Antoine Tamestit, Christian Tetzlaff, Antje Weithaas, Carolin Widmann, Juliane Banse, Matthias Goerne, Veronika Eberle, Sharon Kam, Tabea Zimmermann, and Lars Vogt. Helmchen is an associate professor at the Kronberg Academy. His recordings have been released by Alpha, LPO, PentaTone Classics, Berlin Classics, and Claves.
