Kary Ng

Mandopop star and rocker Kary Ng was born June 9, 1986 in Hong Kong. Nicknamed Lady K, she first gained fame as the youngest member of the group Cookies, and simultaneously served in the short-lived rock band Ping Pung. After both groups disbanded, she launched her solo career with the 2006 album With a Boy Like You, a collection of songs that had a harder rock sound than was typical of most pop star material. It was a huge success and soon she became, at age 20, one of the youngest pop stars in Hong Kong’s history. A sometimes actress, she landed her first lead role in a movie that same year as Kristy in Love @ First Note. Her 2007 follow-up LP, In Control, earned her more industry awards. She scored her most award-winning single with the theme song to the 2008 movie Love Is Not All Around. That same year her album Lady K: Transformation served up a stylistically diverse set of songs that allowed her to expand her sound. She made her debut at the Hong Kong Coliseum in 2011, and the next year her superstar status was sealed when she won the coveted CRHK Award for Best Female Singer. She maintained a steady release pattern, issuing at least one new album every year between 2008 and 2015. Even after this peak period, songs like “Wu Ge Ku” would find their way onto Asian pop charts even into the next decade.
