José Miguel Pérez-Sierra

José Miguel Pérez-Sierra has been one of Spain's most rapidly rising young conductors, with a specialty in opera and specifically in the works of Rossini. He also undertakes a wide variety of orchestral conducting jobs. Pérez-Sierra was born in Madrid in 1981. His first instrument was the piano, and his skills were strong enough to attract José Ferrándiz, a former student of Claudio Arrau, as a mentor. He soon became interested in operatic conducting, though, and took lessons from Gabriele Ferro, who had worked at Madrid's Teatro Real and at several top Italian houses. He went on for further studies with Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2004, Pérez-Sierra became assistant to Alberto Zedda at the Plácido Domingo Center at the Palace of the Arts in Valencia, and he served in a similar role with conductor Lorin Maazel in Valencia and Munich between 2009 and 2012. Meanwhile, Pérez-Sierra launched a conducting career of his own, making his debut with the Symphony Orchestra of Galicia in 2005. His operatic debut came the following year in a performance of Il viaggio a Reims at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy. He also led performances at the Palace of the Arts in Valencia, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile, among other major houses. His symphonic conducting appearances have included those with the Sinfónica de Madrid, the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, and the Euskadiko Orkestra Sinfonikoa in Spain's Basque region, where he has made multiple return visits. His recording debut was with that group in an album featuring two symphonies by Basque-born composer Ángel Illarramendi, released on the Sony Classical label. He has also recorded Rossini operas for the Naxos label, joining the Virtuosi Brunensis and Poland's Camerata Singers in Rossini's rarely heard Aureliano in Palmira. During the 2021-2022 season, Pérez-Sierra made both operatic appearances, leading the Opéra de Marseille in Rossini's Armida and a production of Bizet's Carmen at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, and symphonic ones, conducting the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra and backing soprano Lise Davidsen in concert. In 2022, Pérez-Sierra led a recording of Rossini's likewise rare one-act comic opera La scala di seta, also released on Naxos.
