Jade Jackson

A singer and songwriter whose music is a rootsy blend of country, blues, and folk with a dash of rock & roll for flavor, Jade Jackson makes music that's both tough and tender, revealing emotional vulnerability but making clear she's an independent spirit and nobody's fool. Hailing from a small California town, Jackson grew up on a diet of classic country and alternative rock, and she put the emphasis on her folk and country inclinations on her debut album, 2017's Gilded, which also highlighted the smoky grain of her vocals. Jackson adopted an edgier, more rock-oriented sound on her second LP, 2019's Wilderness. Jade Jackson was born in 1992 in Santa Margarita, California, a small town ten miles from San Luis Obispo with a population of less than 1,500 people. Jackson's parents ran a restaurant in Santa Margarita, and their record collection ran the gamut from classic country artists like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Townes Van Zandt to alternative rock such as the Smiths, the Cure, and Echo and the Bunnymen. Jackson dug deep into her parents' records, in part because they were the household's main source of entertainment, as television and the internet were forbidden to her and her siblings. Jackson was 13 years old when she was first allowed to see a concert without her folks, traveling to San Luis Obispo to see the rockabilly-informed punk band Social Distortion. The show inspired her to take up songwriting, and by the time she finished high school, she'd penned nearly 300 songs and was performing once a week at a local cafe. In 2000, while she was attending the California Institute of the Arts, Jackson suffered a serious accident, breaking her back in a fall from a rope swing. In the hospital, she was given medication to which she was allergic, leading to seizures, and as she went through a long process of recovery, she found she'd become dependent on painkillers. Quitting cold turkey led to another set of problems as she struggled with depression and eating disorders, but she used her songwriting as a means of coping with her issues and finding the strength to work through them. When Jackson returned to performing, Christine Ness, a longtime friend of her mother's, saw Jackson's set at the cafe and was impressed with what she heard. Christine's son Julian also saw Jackson play, and like his mother, he recommended her music to his father, who happened to be Mike Ness, longtime leader of Social Distortion. Ness thought highly of Jackson's songs, and offered to produce her debut album, 2017's Gilded, which was issued by the artist-friendly independent label Anti-. By the time Jackson cut her second LP, 2019's more rock-oriented Wilderness, Julian Ness had joined her road band on guitar.
