Corridor

With a spiky, interlocking guitar sound, vocals sung entirely in French, and rhythms that twisted unpredictably, Montreal's Corridor spent the 2010s making music that hit the sweet spot between pop hooks and post-punk angst. After releasing two albums on which the quintet sharpened their approach, they were signed to Sub Pop -- the first Francophone group to do so -- to release their third record, Junior, in 2019. Formed in the early 2010s by guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Robert and bassist Dominic Berthiaume, Corridor released their debut EP in 2013. The six-song Un Magicien en Toi also featured guitarist Julian Perreault and drummer Marc-André Chapdelaine and was issued by the L'Oeil du Tigre label. The same lineup recorded 2015's Le Voyage Éternel, an album that streamlined their previously more experimental indie rock. It was produced by Emmanuel Ethier; he also contributed synths. The album was again released by L'Oeil du Tigre. The group issued the "Le Viol De Sharone" single in May 2016. A post-punk reimagining of "My Sharona," it was the first recording with drummer Julien Bakvis on board. Corridor began work on their next record, again working with Ethier at a measured pace. The twitchy, tunefully anxious Supermercado was released in 2017 by the French label Requiem Pour un Twister and Citrus City Records in the U.S. At the end of the year, the band issued a single, "Deux Coeurs," with vocalist Halo Maud singing. The group set off on a world tour, playing shows in Europe, hitting SXSW, and crisscrossing America opening for Shame. In 2018, Robert released an album as Jonathan Personne on Requiem Pour un Twister titled Histoire Naturelle, which gathered up psychedelic power pop recordings he made at home. The band returned to the U.S. early in 2019, playing shows with Crumb, while also heading to Europe and the U.K. During this time, Corridor signed with Sub Pop and began work on their third album. They wanted to get the record out before the end of 2019 and were told it needed to be finished and ready to be pressed by the beginning of May. The band quickly wrote songs -- six over the course of one weekend -- then dashed into the studio with Ethier in March. They finished recording and mixing by the middle of April. As the group rushed to finish the album, they expanded their sound to include samples and looser arrangements. Junior was released in October 2019 by both Sub Pop and Canadian label Bonsound, after which the group headed out on tour.
