He left school at the age of 15 to pursue his dream of being a musician, singing in clubs with different bands, releasing his first album with Sweeney Todd and embarking on a songwriting partnership with drummer Jim Vallance that in time provided songs for artists as diverse as Carly Simon, Kiss, Neil Diamond and Rod Stewart.
His self-titled debut solo album was released in 1980 followed by 'You Want It You Got It' just one year later. Quickly finding that he was on the receiving end of great attention and radio airplay, Adams built himself a loyal fan base and a name in the music industry. In 1984 he released his 'Reckless' album which featured some of his biggest hits including 'Run to You', 'Summer of '69' and 'It's Only Love'. His biggest hit came in 1991 with the power ballad '(Everything I Do) I Do It for You' which featured in the movie 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves', achieving a number one in the UK Singles Chart and retaining the position for a record-breaking 16 weeks. With his name made in Hollywood, Adams continued to compose for films, achieving another number one for 'All for Love', a collaboration with Rod Stewart and Sting for the movie 'Three Musketeers' followed by 'Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?' for 'Don Juan DeMarco'. In 2002 Adams co-wrote and performed songs for the animated film 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron', with the song 'Here I Am' giving him a top five hit and a Golden Globe nomination.
Throughout the 2000s Adams continued to compose for films including 'The Guardian', 'Bobby', 'Bridge to Terabithia' and 'Old Dogs' as well as writing new music for solo release, with his eleventh album '11' being released in 2008. In 2015 Adams released his first album of brand new material in seven years titled 'Get Up'. The album's singles 'Brand New Day' and 'You Belong to Me' relaunched his career into the eyes and ears of a new generation. He followed this with greatest hits album 'Ultimate' in 2017, which also featured two new songs, and 'Shine a Light' in 2019.
