Van Morrison nunca ha tenido que elegir entre el rock, el blues, el rhythm&blues, el soul y el jazz, puesto que ha sabido crear un género propio, el vanmorrisonismo, una elegante combinación de rock, blues, soul y jazz… Pero a veces el septuagenario león de Belfast prefiere decantarse un tanto, eventualmente, por uno de esos géneros. Es lo que sucede en Versatile, donde el tono resulta decididamente jazzístico. Solo tres meses después del lanzamiento de Roll With The Punches, en el que versioneaba maravillas del soul y el blues firmadas por Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley o Little Walter, ha decidido revisitar algunos standards ya legendarios del sello Blue Note. Un regreso a las fuentes que lleva a Van The Man a cantar temas de los hermanos Gershwin (A Foggy Day y They Can't Take That Away From Me), Cole Porter (I Get A Kick Out Of You) y clásicos imperecederos como Let's Get Lost (popularizado por Chet Baker), Bye Bye Blackbird, Makin' Whoopee, The Party's Over, Unchained Melody (popularizado el pasado siglo por los Righteous Brothers) o I Left My Heart In San Francisco, uno de los mayores éxitos de Tony Bennett. Un álbum en estudio, el número 38 de su carrera, que el maestro del soul blanco aborda con distanciado sosiego. Su voz de crooner no es la que era, desde luego, hace cuatro o cinco décadas pero no deja de demostrarse segura e incluso incisiva a cada frase. El oyente no encontrará aquí nada especialmente revolucionario, capaz de competir con obras maestras de la categoría de Astral Weeks, Moondance o Veedon Fleece, pero, eso sí, disfrutará no poco.
