Célebre por ser uno de los miembros más activos de Radiohead, el británico Jonny Greenwood desempeña también otra labor más secreta, la de compositor de música cinematográfica. Desde Pozos de ambición, de 2008, se ha convertido en efecto en el compositor favorito de Paul Thomas Anderson, el director de una película tan famosa como Magnolia, estrenada en 1999.
En El hilo invisible la tarea de Greenwood constituye un auténtico reto, puesto que la música está presente prácticamente en la totalidad del film, que dura más de dos horas, envolviendo las imágenes de la misma forma en que el protagonista (un modisto) recubre el cuerpo de las mujeres a las que viste con sus creaciones. Pero la música funciona a la vez como caja de resonancia de los tormentos que aquejan sin cesar al personaje interpretado por Daniel Day-Lewis, quien vive una compleja historia de amor con una de sus modelos (Vicky Crieps). Greenwood ha explicado que se ha inspirado en las Variaciones Goldberg de Bach, en versión de Glenn Gould, a la hora de escribir su partitura, y es cierto que se percibe de fondo el aspecto obsesivo (el famoso «bajo obstinado») que alienta en la obra del compositor alemán. De este modo Greenwood intenta evocar musicalmente el dolor del protagonista.
La acción se sitúa en el Londres mundano de la década de los 50, y el realizador y el compositor han querido retratar la belleza anticuada de esa época. Y el lujo del que se ha beneficiado a su vez Greenwood en lo referente a la grabación de la partitura (más de 60 músicos a su disposición en los estudios de Abbey Road) se demuestra ideal para representar los oropeles pasados. Entre las piezas más vibrantes del álbum están House of Woodcock y, especialmente, Phantom Thread I, con ese legato de unas cuerdas particularmente agudas y muy adecuadas para describir tan glamuroso ambiente y, a la vez, el callado dolor del modisto. No obstante, a veces Greenwood deja esa orquestación, por momentos asfixiante, para ponerse al piano e interpretar, sin acompañamiento alguno, ciertos temas de acentos impresionistas (I’ll Follow tomorrow). Pero ya sea al piano o recurriendo a una amplia paleta orquestal, el objetivo del compositor es finalmente el mismo que cuando trabaja con Radiohead: alcanzar cimas muy elevadas de emoción. ©NM/Qobuz
