Siglo de Oro

The small English chorus Siglo de Oro has a varied repertory but specializes in Spanish Renaissance and Baroque music as well as contemporary works. The group is noted for a series of recordings on the Delphian label, covering generally neglected repertory. Siglo de Oro was formed in 2008 by King's College, London conducting student Patrick Allies and a group of friends who attended various institutions in London. At first, the group had 14 members; since then, the membership has fluctuated but remained at chamber choir dimensions. The choir's website in 2020 showed nine singers. Allies remains the group's leader and artistic director. Siglo de Oro means "Golden Century" in Spanish and refers broadly to the Spanish Golden Age of the 16th and 17th centuries, but the group's repertory has always extended beyond that specialty. Siglo de Oro made its formal debut to positive critical response at the Spitalfields Festival in 2014. The choir later performed at the St. John's Smith Square concert venue in London, the Stour Music Festival, and the Barber Institute. It has performed on the In Tune program on the BBC Radio 3 network and has appeared abroad in the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, and Malta. Siglo de Oro planned 2020 debuts at London's Wigmore Hall and the Tage alter Musik Regensburg Festival in Germany, as well as a U.S. tour. Siglo de Oro has released five albums on the Delphian label, each of them including performances of rarely heard repertory. The choir's recording career began in 2016 with the contemporary sacred music release Drop Down, Ye Heavens. A 2018 disc devoted to the Missa Tulerunt Dominum Meum of Hieronymus Praetorius earned a five-star rating from BBC Music Magazine, and another noted recording featured the music of the virtually unknown composer Matthias Werrecore. In 2020, Siglo de Oro released Christmas in Puebla, featuring Baroque music, some of it African- or Native American-influenced, from the cathedral of Puebla, Mexico. That album was crowdfunded under the name "The Padilla Project," referring to the main featured composer, Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla.
