"Wonderful Mystery", the story of Christ: to some, a real historical figure, to others, the son of God, and to others, an invention by the first Christians – for centuries Europeans have been cordially killing each other over these distinctions. Music, well-known for softening people's attitudes, has been played to celebrate the birth of Christ for centuries; and since the invention of musical notation there have existed many works celebrating the Nativity. The Huelgas Ensemble – wonderful for sure, but there's no mystery about their seriously hard musical and musicological work – are offering us here a range of Christmas pieces, starting with the late Middle Ages, around 1350, up to the start of the Renaissance: either anonymous or signed by Jean Mouton. There follows a broad selection of pieces from the Renaissance itself, be it Flemish, French or Spanish: Sweelinck, Lésbio, Manchicourt, de Weert. Almost as an aside, the Huelgas Ensemble offer us a few neo-Medieval forays, with British organist and church musician Bertram Luard-Selby and, more uniquely, Peter Cornelius, the author of the comic opera Der Barbier von Bagdad, incredible quantities of Lieder, but also a collection of Christmas songs, from which is drawn Three Kings, also written in a neo-historical style. © SM/Qobuz
