Two Door Cinema Club's fifth album, 2022's Keep on Smiling, finds the group balancing the kinetic post-punk of their early work with the dancey synth pop they embraced with 2019's False Alarm. Following the breakthrough success of 2010's Tourist History, the Irish trio of singer/guitarist/programmer Alex Trimble, guitarist/singer Sam Halliday, and bassist/singer Kevin Baird began expanding their sound, exploring a ruminative adult-contemporary style on 2012's Beacon before diving into the Giorgio Moroder-inspired disco of 2016's Gameshow. With Trimble's bright tenor leading the way, the band retain their knack for crafting buoyant anthems on Keep on Smiling, bringing together sugary, Day-Glo instrumentation with romantic and heartfelt lyrics. In that sense, the album feels like a continuation of the early-'80s Sparks-meets-Oingo Boingo-style pop of False Alarm and once again pairs them with longtime producer Jacknife Lee, as well as Dan Grech-Marguerat. Cuts like "Blue Light" and "Millionaire" are wry art-pop pieces built around fizzy, Casio-sounding keyboard riffs, broken-glass guitar hits, and tropical disco grooves. A stylish paranoia runs throughout much of Keep on Smiling, as on "Everybody's Cool," a shimmering Euro-disco number that sounds like a vacation in Ibiza but feels like it's about social-media-induced FOMO. On "Lucky," Trimble seems to outline the album's bitter pill wrapped in sugar, singing "The entertainment's killing us again." That song, as well as "Wonderful Life," also harks back to the driving dance-rock of the band's first album. Elsewhere, we get the balmy midsummer balladry of "High" and the funky, Robert Palmer-esque club number "Feeling Strange." There's certainly a hooky immediacy to much of Keep on Smiling, but it's given depth by Two Door Cinema Club's increasingly artful and sardonic pop approach.
