La segunda mitad de los 70 fue un periodo de lo más prolífico para Bob Marley, por entonces en la cima de su popularidad, durante el cual alcanzó fama mundial al ritmo de un álbum por año. Tras Rastaman Vibration en 1976 y Exodus en 1977 el jamaicano lanzaba en marzo de 1978 este Kaya, cuyos cortes salieran de las mismas sesiones que Exodus, efectuadas durante los primeros meses de su exilio londinense a comienzos del año anterio. El álbum, que se consideró por entonces algo ligero sin duda a causa de su tema Kaya (que significa marihuana en argot jamaicano), comenzaba por lo demás con“Excuse me while I light my spliff” de Easy Skanking, como si Marley asumiera el aspecto cara B de estas canciones. Pero nos equivocaríamos si subestimáramos el poder de la máquina de éxitos que eran The Wailers, puesto que el álbum contiene dos de los hits más populares de su discografía, Is This Love y Satisfy My Soul, que sería doble platino en Francia y disco de oro en USA.
Bob Marley aprovecharía igualmente estas sesiones para revisitar su etapa junto a Lee “Scratch” Perry con el tema epónimo Kaya, en una versión cincelada sin la delirante guitarra flamenca del padre del dub, como símbolo de la fuerte influencia de Island –en detrimento del romanticismo, dirán algunos…–, mientras que Sun Is Shining, más etérea que la original, adquiere envergadura y mordiente gracias a la guitarra eléctrica de Junior Marvin. En la cara B de la época se encontraban también She’s Gone, una canción de amor no correspondido, Crisis, que parece un spin-off surgido de un ensayo de Is This Love, o el ritmo rastaman de Time Will Tell, acompasado por un tambor nyabinghi. El disco concluye con el humor socarrón de Smile Jamaica, corte escrito para un mítico concierto de igual nombre celebrado el 5 de diciembre de 1976 en el National Heroes Park de Kingston, Jamaica, donde Bob Marley participara dos días después de que le dispararan… © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
