Azusa

Azuza is an international progressive metal supergroup whose members come from Dillinger Escape Plan, Extol, and Sea + Air. They blazed onto the scene with their 2018 debut LP Heavy Yoke with a sound that ripped the seams between black and prog metal, post-rock, dream pop, and metalcore while making use of many other styles as well. Their debut album was celebrated across the globe; it drew praise from print, media and internet venues as disparate as Decibel, Indie Vision Music, and NPR. Azuza grew out of Norway's Extol, the Christian progressive metal band (1993-2007) formed by cousins Christer Espevoll (guitar, vocals) and David Husvik (drums). The pair were reacquainted while attending a Benea Reach gig (another of Espevoll's former bands). They began demo'ing new material and communicating with bassist Liam Wilson (Dillinger Escape Plan), who expressed his undying admiration for Extol. Wilson was invited to join the pair to form a new band. Desiring to be free of vocal duties, Husvik suggested hiring of Greek singer and songwriter Eleni Zafiriadou of indie pop outfit Sea + Air. Husvik had seen her perform with another project, an early punk band called Jumbo Jet, that featured clean and dirty vocals. The quartet commenced recording singles that prefaced their 2018 debut long-player Heavy Yoke. Released by Indie Recordings in Europe and Solid State in the U.S., the album was unanimously acclaimed across the globe. After taking their music out on the road, Azuza regrouped in the studio late in 2019 and again began to preview singles digitally and on YouTube. In April of the following year, they issued their self-produced sophomore album Loop of Yesterdays.
