French music of the late Romantic era was almost completely overshadowed by the established German tradition, to the effect that many exceptional composers, such as Vincent d'Indy, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Ernest Chausson, were relegated to secondary status behind their German colleagues, and their works were seriously under-performed. This situation persisted through the 20th century, and the works on this 2011 hybrid-SACD from PentaTone Classics might seem unfamiliar because they were seldom programmed and recorded. Fortunately, in the 21st century there are champions for French symphonic music, such as Marek Janowski and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the ongoing rediscovery of this somewhat neglected repertoire promises a restoration of some great pieces. Perhaps best known of the three selections, d'Indy's Symphony on a French Mountain Air is wonderfully atmospheric, and its delicate orchestration and evanescent moods in some ways anticipate Impressionism. The Symphony No. 2 in A minor is played far less frequently than Saint-Saëns' extremely popular Symphony No. 3, "Organ," though it is a solid piece of craftsmanship and is quite representative of the Classically oriented French symphonies produced in the mid-19th century. On its surface, Chausson's Soir de fête seems to have the strongest German flavor, yet while the composer was plainly influenced by Liszt and Wagner, the piece also owes a considerable amount of its verve to Berlioz. Janowski and the orchestra present these works with smooth technique and scintillating colors, and the depth and lushness of the ensemble's sound come across impressively in the multichannel format.

Mahler y “Das Lied von der Erde”

¿Qué pudo llevar a Gustav Mahler, en 1907-08, a componer una obra tan inclasificable como ésta? Escrita en un momento crucial de su vida, “La Canción de la Tierra” ocupa un lugar especial en su obra y combina el espíritu “fin de siècle” con la fascinación por lo exótico que crecía entre sus contemporáneos de la época. Viena estaba en plena efervescencia y esta pieza, que oscila entre la despedida y el nuevo comienzo, merece una mirada más atenta.

Suzanne Danco, una soprano sincera y sensible

La cantante belga Suzanne Danco, fallecida en agosto de 2000, sigue muy viva en la memoria de los melómanos gracias a numerosas reediciones, entre ellas la magnífica caja de 8 discos publicada por Decca Eloquence Australia. Consumada mozartiana, la soprano belga engalanó el Festival de Aix-en-Provence desde su debut en 1948, antes de registrar versiones emblemáticas del Shéhérazade de Ravel con Ansermet, con quien grabó toda una serie de discos imprescindibles. Habiendo tenido la suerte de conocerla de cerca, el director describiría a la artista como una querida amiga.

Neoclásico: un nuevo mundo en la frontera entre el electro y el clásico

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... En los últimos años, todos estos nombres tan de moda se han agrupado bajo la vasta e imprecisa etiqueta de «neoclásico». Pero, a decir verdad, este «escenario» se parece más a una banda heterogénea de inquietos artistas que mezclan instrumentos clásicos y producción electrónica –desde una supuesta conexión con los pioneros del minimalismo estadounidense… que deleitan los sentidos, y que abren perspectivas a ambos lados de su espectro musical.
